Costa Rica, globally renowned for its excellent coffee and strong commitment to environmental sustainability, has become a fascinating destination for wine lovers and ecotourism. During our recent visit, Toral Wines & Spirits had the unique opportunity to explore this vibrant market, connecting with local distributors, retailers, and restaurants while discovering the secrets of Costa Rica’s Pura Vida lifestyle.
The Costa Rican Wine Landscape
Chile leads the market with 50% share
Our market analysis revealed that Chilean wines clearly dominate the Costa Rican scene, representing around 50% of the available offerings, especially along the Pacific coast. This preference is largely due to geographical proximity, favorable trade agreements, and the excellent value Chilean wines offer.
Argentina and Spain round out the podium
Argentine and Spanish wines take second place, each with about 20% of the market. Costa Rican consumers particularly appreciate Argentine Malbecs and Spanish Tempranillos, which pair well with the country’s tropical climate. Californian wines make up the remaining 10%, with KJ, Robert Mondavi Woodbridge, and Barefoot (Gallo) being the most recognized U.S. brands.
Adapting to the Tropical Climate: Consumption Preferences
Crisp white wines for humid heat
Costa Rica’s hot and humid climate—with temperatures around 90°F and 90% humidity—significantly influences consumption preferences. Chilean Sauvignon Blanc and Spanish Verdejo have become favorite choices, served well chilled to combat the intense tropical heat.
Interestingly, we observed that even red wines are often served chilled in many establishments—a practice that, while unconventional, makes perfect sense in Costa Rica’s climate.
Competing with Local Beverages
Wines compete directly with traditional Costa Rican beverages: Imperial beer and Cacique Guaro rum, the latter often mixed with tropical fruit juices or agua de pipa (coconut water). This local competition keeps wine prices relatively high due to heavy alcohol taxes.
Costa Rican Cuisine: Simplicity and Freshness
Costa Rican cuisine is known for its simplicity and freshness, built on local ingredients like fresh fish, tropical fruits, rice, and black beans. Typical dishes include chicken, fried plantains, and artisanal cheeses, all prepared with a Caribbean-influenced style.
Tilapia ceviche with mango and fresh fillets of sea bass or mahi mahi are culinary highlights, perfectly paired with fresh, aromatic white wines.
World-Class Ecotourism
Costa Rica has elevated ecotourism to an art form. With over 25% of its territory dedicated to national parks, the country has built its entire tourism economy around rainforest protection and environmental conservation.
Our Experience in Costa Rica
Our visit was an opportunity to strengthen relationships with local distributors, retailers, and restaurants, and to explore the growing interest in quality wine in the Costa Rican market. Among the brands already present is 9 Fairway, featuring the well-known Buttery Chardonnay—a product successful in Brazil and the U.S.
During our stay, we not only shared experiences with key players in the gastronomy sector, but also participated in the podcast “Tomar no es complicado”, where we discussed with hosts Nacho and Eleazar the experience of introducing premium wines in a country with a developing wine tradition but a growing sophisticated palate.
Save the Date: “Chile entre Copas” Event
On July 26, the “Chile entre Copas” event will be held in San José, Costa Rica, where local consumers will have the chance to taste the wines currently available in the Costa Rican market.
Special Highlight: Casa Donoso Bourbon Barrel Aged
As part of our market exploration, we introduced Casa Donoso Bourbon Barrel Aged, a premium wine that embodies the innovation and quality Toral Wines & Spirits brings to international markets. Aged in bourbon barrels, this exceptional wine offers complexity and elegance that perfectly complement Costa Rica’s cuisine and evolving consumer preferences.
Costa Rica proves that Pura Vida is not just a slogan, but a philosophy of life—embracing simplicity, sustainability, and living in the moment. For wine and ecotourism lovers, this Central American country offers an authentic, unforgettable experience that blends nature, culture, and excellent commercial opportunities.
Toral Wines & Spirits reaffirms its commitment to bringing quality wines to every corner of the world, and Costa Rica—with its vibrant energy and zest for life—has been an unforgettable stop on that journey.
