Comparing Market Watch’s 2021 and 2025 Hot Brand lists reveals where growth is happening—and what every alcohol brand owner should learn.
By Cristóbal Toral
President, Toral Wines & Spirits
Every year, Impact Databank and Market Watch Magazine recognize the fastest-growing beverage alcohol brands in the United States through their prestigious Hot Brand Awards.
For producers, importers, and brand owners, this is far more than another industry ranking.
It is one of the clearest indicators of where American consumers are spending their money—and where distributors and retailers are finding the strongest momentum.
When comparing the 2021 Hot Brand list with the 2025 Hot Brand list, one statistic immediately stands out.
In 2021, 35 wine brands qualified as Hot Brands.
By 2025, that number had fallen to only 12. Meanwhile, the total Hot Brand universe across wine, spirits, and RTDs contracted from 96 brands to 45.
That isn’t simply a smaller list.
It’s a more competitive market.
What Is an Impact Hot Brand?
An Impact Hot Brand is not chosen because of beautiful packaging, high critic scores, or marketing budgets.
It earns the recognition through commercial performance.
To qualify, a brand must first reach significant scale:
- Spirits: minimum 200,000 9-liter cases.
- Imported wines: minimum 200,000 cases.
- Domestic wines and RTDs: minimum 250,000 cases.
Then the brand must meet one of three performance criteria:
- Double-digit growth for three consecutive years.
- At least 15% growth in the most recent year.
- Or, if already a Top-10 brand, at least 5% annual growth and 15% cumulative growth over the previous three years.
This means Hot Brands aren’t simply growing.
They are consistently outperforming the market.
The Brands That Stayed Hot
Only a handful of wine brands successfully remained among the industry’s fastest-growing labels.
Among the exact repeat brands were:
- La Marca Prosecco
- Whitehaven
- Opera Prima
- Bota Box Breeze
These brands look very different, but they share several characteristics.
They own a clear consumer occasion.
They communicate a simple proposition.
They continue innovating.
Most importantly, they never stopped investing in commercial execution.
Growth wasn’t accidental.
The New Winners
The 2025 list also introduced a new generation of brands.
Among them:
- Bonanza
- Gratsi
- Josh Cellars Seaswept
- Winemakers Selection
- Silver Gate
- California Heritage
- Vibe by Vendange
- Century Road
- Fre
Each of these brands represents a different answer to today’s consumer.
Some compete through convenience.
Others through alternative packaging.
Others through lifestyle.
Others through affordability.
Others through innovation.
The common denominator isn’t category.
It’s relevance.
What Alcohol Brands Should Learn
The comparison between 2021 and 2025 tells us that consumers are rewarding brands that solve a problem rather than simply offering another SKU.
Today’s successful brands tend to:
- Own a specific consumption occasion.
- Tell a story consumers can repeat.
- Simplify the buying decision.
- Innovate without confusing the shopper.
- Support distributors with commercial programs.
Consumers increasingly buy brands that fit their lifestyle—not just products that fit a category.
Five Questions Every Alcohol Brand Should Ask
Before developing your next product, ask yourself:
1. What occasion does this product own?
Is it brunch?
A beach day?
A rooftop gathering?
Game day?
Dinner?
Celebration?
2. Can consumers understand my brand in five seconds?
If the answer requires a paragraph, the shelf has already won.
3. Does my packaging immediately stand out?
The fastest-growing brands increasingly differentiate themselves through packaging, format, or presentation.
4. Is my innovation meaningful?
Innovation isn’t about being different.
It’s about making life easier or more enjoyable for consumers.
5. Can I support long-term commercial growth?
Distribution isn’t the finish line.
It’s the starting point.
What We See at Toral Wines
At Toral Wines & Spirits, we spend every week speaking with importers, distributors, retailers, and producers across the Americas.
Several trends continue to emerge.
Consumers are increasingly attracted to:
- Sparkling wines.
- Premium convenience.
- Alternative packaging.
- Ready-to-serve cocktails.
- Lower-alcohol options.
- Products with authentic stories.
- Occasion-driven brands.
- Limited editions.
- Flavor exploration.
The shelf is changing.
And so is the consumer.
The Toral Wines Action Plan
Based on these findings, we recommend that producers focus on five priorities:
- Study the shelf before developing the product.
- Build a proposition—not simply another label.
- Develop a memorable commercial story.
- Select the right importer and distributor network.
- Continue investing in commercial development after market entry.
- Launching a product is only the beginning.
- Building sustained commercial momentum is what ultimately creates a Hot Brand.
The Opportunity Ahead
The next Hot Brand will not necessarily come from the largest producer or the oldest winery.
It will come from the company that best understands today’s consumer, builds a differentiated proposition, and executes consistently in the marketplace.
At Toral Wines & Spirits, we serve as an outsourced commercial development engine for emerging alcohol brands. We help producers transform strong products into scalable businesses by combining market intelligence, commercial strategy, importer and distributor prospecting, and long-term business development across the Americas.
Our objective is not simply to help brands enter the market—but to help them build the commercial foundations that can one day earn recognition as the industry’s next Impact Hot Brand.
